Love Gods I Play the Villain Play Shakespeare
This show helps people to love Shakespeare.
We discuss his audiences and the rough comedy that they would have appreciated: of situation, of rules and roles, of wit and pun and bawdiness, and of social satire, holding "as 'twere a mirror up to nature."
We demonstrate the tenets of Shakespearean acting, suiting "the action to the word, and the word to the action," for instance, and speaking "the speech trippingly on the tongue."
We involve the audience in the texts and techniques of Elizabethan theater, putting cue-scripts in their hands and helping them to play right along with us.
Along the way, we perform pieces from such plays as Twelfth Night, Taming of the Shrew, Measure for Measure, Othello, The Merchant of Venice, Macbeth, As You Like It, Henry V, Richard III, Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Much Ado about Nothing.
Love Gods focuses on the way Shakespeare puts characters together in impossible situations, delighting audiences with the way they work out their differences. I Play the Villain shows how Shakespeare allows us to revel in the darker sides of our nature. Play Shakespeare is designed for upper-elementary through middle-school students, our school show.
All versions of Naked Shakespeare are available anytime, anywhere.
